Cut the Risk of Cerebral Palsy in Premature Babies

The risk of cerebral palsy in premature babies can be cut by giving the mothers magnesium sulfate just before they give birth. The mineral compound is used already to treat pregnancy-related high blood pressure and to stop early labor. The mineral is cheap and not harmful.

Cerebral palsy is a serious condition and complication of premature babies. It is caused by damage to the part of the brain that controls movement. It would cause poor muscle control and coordination. It is not completely clear how magnesium sulfate words but it is assumed that it opens up the blood vessels in the infant’s brain. The mineral is also a sedative and can make the mothers and infants feel sleepy.

There also was a study that found that women that take folic acid for at least a year before they get pregnant could reduce their chances of premature birth by 50 to 70 percent. Taking folic acid is already recommended for women to prevent birth defects of the brain and spinal cord, such as spina bifada.

Food Poisoning Causes Long-Term Health Problems

It is known that food poisoning, E. coli, and other food borne illnesses can cause serious health problems for months or years after the person survives through it. High blood pressure, kidney damage, and full kidney failure could happen even 10 or 20 years later in people who had a severe E. coli infection as a child. Arthritis could happen after suffer from Shigella. A mysterious paralysis could happen to people who had mild symptoms of campylobacter.

The late effects make up a small amount of the 76 million annual food poisonings in the U.S. Other illnesses could possibly be linked to food poisoning. Some people that had food poisoning earlier in their life have to get kidney transplants later in their life. Some people get scarred intestines that cause long term digestive problems. About 10 percent of people that have suffered E. coli develop a very severe problem called hemolytic uremic syndrome, where their kidneys and other organs would fail.

Some people who suffer from campylobacter, which is a diarrhea-causing infection that is spread by raw poultry, develop Guillain-Barre syndrome at least a month later. Their body would attack their nerves and cause paralysis that would require intensive care and a ventilator to breathe.

Some people develop reactive arthritis at least six months after they have salmonella. It would cause joint pain, eye inflammation, and possibly painful urination. It could also cause chronic arthritis.

Cold Medicines Bad for Toddlers and Babies

The government is recently stating that over-the-counter cough and cold medicines are not safe for toddlers and babies. In October, drug companies stopped selling dozens of nonprescription cold medicines that were targeted towards young children and babies. The Food and Drug Administration’s scientific advisers voted that the drugs don’t work in small children and shouldn’t be used on any children under the age of 6 years old.

The Food and Drug Administration hasn’t decided yet if OTC decongestants, antihistamines, and cough suppressants are okay for children older than 6 years old. The FDA is warning that serious and possibly life-threatening side effects can happen. The possibilities of serious side effects are small but they do happen to some children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 1,500 babies and toddlers had to go to the emergency room over a two-year period because of the drugs and medicines. The biggest risks come from giving a child an overdose of medicine.

If a toddler or baby is sick, it is best to give the child plenty of liquids, let the child get lots of rest, give the child saline drops if it has a stuffy nose, and use humidifiers while the child is sleeping.

Scientists Produce Human Embryo Clones

There are scientists in California that have made embryos that are clones of two different men. The embryos were made using ordinary skin cells. The next big thing they are waiting for is to make a human embryonic stem cell line from cloned human embryos. Scientists think that stem cells from cloned embryos could be used to study diseases, screen drugs, and make transplant materials to treat conditions, such as diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.

The problems with cloning human embryos include, creating human lives in a laboratory purposely to destroy them to benefit and help other people, there are health risks involved in the process, and exploiting the women who are asked to provide eggs.

The cloning process works by injecting DNA from a person into an egg. The egg would grow into an embryo in about five days. Then, stem cells would be extracted from the embryo.

Scientists Developing Surgical Robot for Surgeries

There are scientists in London that are developing a surgical robot that could help surgeons do complex surgical procedures without having to cut into the patient’s skin. A team at the Imperial College has been given $4.5 million to build and test a surgical robot that is called the “i-Snake”.

The robot is made up of a long tube that has special motors, sensors, and imaging tools inside of it. It would be inserted through the patient’s mouth or other orifice and would eliminate the need for a keyhole surgery, where several cuts would be made. The i-Snake would cause less invasive treatments, surgeries would be faster, and recovery times would be quicker.

Green and Black Teas Could Prevent Skin Cancer

A study has shown that green and black teas could prevent skin cancer. Both of the teas have antioxidants that help to fight UV-induced damage. A survey done by epidemiologists from the Dartmouth Medical School surveyed 1,466 people with non melanoma skin cancer and 715 people in the same age group who didn’t have the disease about their tea drinking habits. The people who had been drinking tea the longest or drank at least two cups per day had the greatest protection against skin cancer.

Cities Encouraging Residents to Go Green

Some cities are starting to offer incentives to get people to go green by offering free hybrid car parking, cash rebates for installing solar panels, low-interest loans for energy-saving home renovations, and offering money to tear up desert lawns and replace them with drought-resistant landscaping.

The city of Parkland is giving cash rebates to its residents for being more environmentally friendly by offering residents that install low-flow toilets or shower heads a $150 check. They pay a person replacing an old air conditioner with an energy-efficient one $100. They are paying people who buy a hybrid car $200.

Some states are offering rebates and incentives through tax breaks, loans, and letting hybrid car users to use car pool lanes. The federal government is also offering tax incentives for purchasing many of the hybrid cars on the market and buying energy-saving products.

Next year, San Francisco will offer homeowners rebates of up to $5,000 for installing solar panels if they choose to use a local contractor. The city will cover up to 90 percent of the costs of making apartment buildings more energy-efficient and will pay residents $150 to replace old appliances they have in their household. In Arizona, many cities will pay residents to replace grass with artificial turf or plants that would use less water.

Study Says CT Scans Raise Cancer Risks

A recent study claims that in a few decades, about 2 percent of all people with cancer in the United States might come from radiation from CT scans, which are used to diagnose medical problems. They say that children are more susceptible to the radiation given off by CT scanners and more likely to develop cancer from it. The risk of cancer from a single CT scan is small but it increases with each scan that is done in a person’s lifetime. MRI scans are a safer option that doesn’t expose people to radiation.

Hospital Fined After Operating on Wrong Side of Body Again

A Rhode Island hospital was fined $50,000 and reprimanded by the state Department of Health Monday after their third situation this year of a doctor performing brain surgery on the wrong side of a patient’s head. The most recent situation happened on Friday when the chief resident started brain surgery on the wrong side of the head of an 82 year old patient. The patient is okay, but back in August, a patient died a few weeks after a doctor performed brain surgery on the wrong side of the head. After that the hospital received an independent review of its neurosurgery practices and it has to have better verification from doctors of its surgery plans. The hospital says that it is currently working with the Department of Health to reduce the risk of medical errors. They also say they are re-evaluating their training policies and providing more oversight by giving the nursing staff the power to make sure that the procedures are properly followed.

Along with the fine, the state has ordered the hospital to make a neurosurgery checklist that has information about the location of the surgery and the patient’s medical history. They also have to make a plan to train the staff of the new checklist.

Natural Cold Cures

A study says that knowing and keeping track of your BMI could help fight off colon cancer. The National Cancer Institute studied the health history of more than 200,000 women and found that 50 to 71 year old women who were a little overweight increased their chances of getting cancer by 29% as compared to lean women. Being moderately overweight increased risks by 31% and being obese increased risks by 49%. Fat cells produce and release hormones that could cause cancer cell growth.

Stress Weakens Teeth

In Brazil, 14 tests were done that showed that stressed-out people have a higher risk of periodontal disease. Also, increased levels of the stress hormone, called cortisol, might have a negative effect on the immune system and allow bacteria to invade the gums. You can lower stress levels by exercising and sleeping more.

Pollution Can Shut Down the Immune System

A study has show that air pollution can cause heart problems and shut down the immune system. This is caused due to pollutants in the ozone that can affect the lungs and the rest of the body and make it easier for the entry of bacteria and viruses. The pollution also causes the immune system to overreact and kill its own cells that it needs to fight bacteria and illnesses.

Scientist Explain Reasons for Chocolate Cravings

A study has found there is a type of bacteria in the digestive system that craves chocolate. Everyone has microbes in their stomach but people who have chocolate cravings have different colonies of bacteria.

The study was done by finding 11 men who never ate chocolate and 11 men who ate chocolate everyday. All of the men wee healthy, not obese, and were fed the same foods for five days. The researchers examined the byproducts of their metabolism in their blood and urine and found that a dozen substances were different between the two groups. The amino acid glycine levels were higher in the men that ate chocolate. People who ate chocolate also had lower levels of bad cholesterol.

It is known that bacteria interact with what you eat and studies have shown that intestinal bacteria changes when people lose weight. Someday, some types of obesity will be able to be treated by changing the bacteria in the intestines and stomach.

Germs Taken to Space Come Back Stronger and Deadlier

The germ Salmonella was put on a space shuttle and sent into space because scientists wanted to see how space travel has an affect on germs. Researchers found that 167 genes had changed in the salmonella that went into space. They say that the germs change genetically because they sensed that they were in new environment. When they fed mice the germs from space they were three times more likely to get sick and die than the mice that were fed germs that didn’t go into space.

Brain-Eating Amoeba Causes Deaths

It is reported that a brain-eating amoeba has been causing deaths and health scares. The amoeba gets into the body through the nasal cavity and destroys tissue as it moves toward the brain. You can get it by swimming in lakes, hot springs, and swimming pools. It lives in the bottom of the waters and lives off of algae and bacteria. People can get infected when they wade through the water and stir up the bottom of the water. It has infected and killed 23 people between 1995 and 2004. There have been several hundred cases worldwide since its discovery in 1960.

People that are infected complain about a stiff neck, headaches, and fevers. They soon show signs of brain damage and have hallucinations and changes in behavior. There is a very small chance of surviving and the infected die within two weeks.

Study Shows that Alcohol Increases Risk of Cancer

A recent study has show that alcohol can increase the chances of getting breast cancer in women. Studies have shown a link between drinking alcohol and breast cancer but they have yet to determine if certain types of alcohol is more dangerous than others.

The study analyzed the drinking habits of 70,033 women and asked them various questions during health exams between the years 1978 and 1985. By the year 2004, 2,829 of those women had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The study found that women who had one or two drinks a day increased their risk by 10 percent and women who had more than three drinks a day increased their risk by 30 percent.

Experts think that alcohol raises hormone levels in the blood to levels that could cause cancer. Doctors say that other factors, such as genetics, obesity, and age are more important factors that can raise the risk of breast cancer.

Study Says Video Games Cause Lower Grades

A recent study has show that video-game systems in dorms cause students to study less and have lower grade-point averages. A study done at the University of Western Ontario found that video-game systems in the dorms led to 40 minutes less time of studying and GPAs 0.241 points lower than average. The students participating in the study tracked their studying, sleeping, partying, working, gaming, and other activities. In the end they found that more studying equals higher grades.

Burger King Will Have Healthier Kid’s Menu

Burger King has decided to offer healthier items on their menu for children under age 12. They plan to sell flame-broiled Chicken Tenders and apples cut to look like thickly cut french fries. They also have set nutritional guidelines to follow when targeting children under 12 years old in advertising by only advertising Kids Meals that have less than 560 calories with less than 30 percent of the calories from fat and no more than 10 percent of the calories from added sugars.

The company is making a Kids Meal that will have the flame-broiled Tenders, organic unsweetened applesauce, and low-fat milk. The meal would have 305 calories and 8.5 grams of fat. They are also in the process of developing the BK Fresh Apple Fries, which are red apples that are cut to look like french fries and are served in the same containers as fries. They are not fried and are served without the skin and cold. They will only have 35 calories. Burger King will use U.S. grown apples that are cut and packaged in a clean and sterile environment. They will wash the apples with a pre-wash that contains lemon to prevent them from turning brown.

All of the changes and improvements are an effort to offer healthier options and make people more aware and cautious about what they eat and feed their children at fast-food restaurants. It will only be successful if the food tastes good and is filling. It may bring positive and healthy changes.

Moldy Homes Can Cause Depression

A new health study links damp, moldy homes to depression. To conduct the study the World Health Organization went to thousands of homes and asked residents a series of questions. They asked if they had depressive symptoms, such as decreased appetite, low self-esteem, and sleeping problems. They visually checked each household and looked for spots on walls and ceilings that indicated mold. The study concluded that a how healthy and clean a home is can affect a person’s health and well being.

Why You Should Buy Organic Foods

Organic fruits are products that are free of synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, irradiation, and biotechnology. They are more nutritional because plants produce more vitamins and antioxidants when grown without using pesticides and fertilizers. Organic farmers usually conserve energy and help to protect the environment by growing their foods organic. Not using fertilizers and pesticides reduce pollution of groundwater. Organic agriculture reduces the greenhouse effect and global warming. Organic meat comes from animals that were raised without being fed antibiotics or growth hormones.

When you are shopping for organic foods you should look for the USDA seal. On meat and dairy products, this seal tells you that you are buying antibiotic and hormone-free products.

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies

If you have a fruit fly problem there are ways to get rid of them. You should find and get rid of their breeding sites. The flies enter homes on the damaged areas of over ripe fruits and vegetables, so get rid of food that is starting to rot. Clean other areas where the flies could be breeding, such as beneath the garbage disposal, in the bottom of the trash can, or in unwashed cans and bottles.

You can make a fruit fly trap by placing a funnel in a jar and pouring in a few tablespoons of cider vinegar. The flies will fly in but they won't find their way out.

You should cut off all of the damaged areas on fruits and vegetables as s soon as you get home and put what you can in the refrigerator because fruit flies can't survive in cold temperatures. Any fruits that can't be refrigerated should be placed in a loosely covered bowl.

Cell Phones Cause Cancer

Cell Phones are microwave transmitters that oscillate at millions to billions of cycles per second. Those frequencies can cause cancer and other diseases by interfering with cellular DNA and its repair mechanisms. The cellular microwaves and radiation even cause rapid cell aging and makes cancerous cells grow more rapidly and aggressively. It is a good tip not to point your cellular antenna towards any exposed part of the body but radiation also comes through the keypad and mouthpiece and affects the brain, ear, and eye tissues. Belt clips allows radiation to affect the liver and kidney.

Left Handed Women Have Shorter Life Span

A study shows that women who are left-handed have a shorter life span due to cancer and cerebrovascular disease. The study showed that the women had a 40 percent higher risk of dying from any cause, a 70 percent greater risk of dying from cancer, and a 30 percent greater risk of dying from diseases from the circulatory system.

Medicare Won’t Pay for Hospital Errors

It is reported that in a policy change, the Bush administration officials say that from now on Medicare will no longer pay the extra costs of treating preventable errors, injuries, and infections that happen in hospitals. That includes bedsores, pressure ulcers, injuries caused by falls, and infections resulting from the prolonged use of catheters in blood vessels or the bladder. They also plan not to pay for things like leaving a sponge or other object in a patient during surgery and giving a patient incompatible blood or blood products. Private insurers are thinking about making the same changes. It suppose to force hospitals to be more careful about the care of their patients and save millions of dollars.

Sweet Snacks Help Stress

It is reported that eating sugary foods when you are stressed can help you relax. Glucocorticoid is released during times of physical or mental stress. Too much glucocorticoid production can cause obesity and a decreased immune response. Research has found that when sweet snacks or drinks were consumed, lower levels of glucocorticoid were produced, and stress levels were lowered. When you are feeling stressed or pressure, a snack in moderation could help you relax.

Obesity Virus

It is reported that when human stem cells are exposed to a common virus they turn into fat cells. The cells didn't just change, but they stored fat too. It proves that some cases of obesity could be caused more than just a big appetite and not enough physical activity.

For several years, researchers looked for a link between obesity and the adenovirus-36. They found that a higher percentage of fat people were infected with the virus than non fat people. When they exposed animals to the virus, the animals fattened up. The found a gene in the virus that caused animal to get obese. The also took fat tissue from people who had liposuction and removed adult stem cells from the tissue and exposed the cells to the virus in the lab. More than half of the stem cells turned into fat cells.

If there is a vial cause to obesity, a vaccine could be created within the next 5 to 10 years to prevent the virus from making some people fat.

The Benefits of Water and Longevity

Water is one of the most important natural elements on earth. There are a lot of reasons that we need water for our basic survival and water has a lot of benefits that keep us healthy. Here are some of the benefits.

The human body is made up of between 55 to 75 percent of water and almost every cell in your body needs water to function properly. Migraines Raise Stroke Risk

It is reported that women whose migraine headaches produce visual symptoms, called auras, are almost seven times more likely to have a stroke compared to women without a history of migraines. Eight percent of stoke cases had onset of migraines with auras. Women who smoke and use oral contraceptives have seven times the risk of stroke than women who just had the migraines and aura.

The most common stoke associated with migraines is ischemic stroke. A person has ischemic stoke when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood to the brain.

A woman with migraines can lower her risk of stroke by not smoking and finding alternatives to the use of estrogen-containing contraceptives.

Anti-aging Vitamins

Are you interested in spending the rest of your life looking and feeling young and healthy? Aging is the result of the body’s cells dying faster than new cells being created. Most of the consequences we suffer from aging come from lifestyle choices more than from the natural aging process.

It is important to take vitamins for overall healthy but they also play a major part when it comes to slowing down the aging process. As we age, our bodies don’t process nutrients as well, so you have to increase your nutrient intake. You should take a multivitamin daily to get important nutritional protection against free radicals and help eliminate toxins.

Vitamin D helps to prevent osteoporosis and B Vitamins help to prevent heart disease and memory loss.

The mineral selenium helps to protect the body from cancers, including skin cancer. It also helps with tissue elasticity and slows down the aging and hardening of tissues that are associated with oxidation. The mineral can be found in whole grain cereals, seafood, garlic, and eggs.

Vitamin E is an important antioxidant because it helps to delay the aging process and protects cell membranes and prevents damages to enzymes. It also helps to inactivate free radicals to make them less likely to cause damage. Putting the vitamin on your skin can reduce damage caused by sun exposure and limit the production of cancer-causing cells. It also reduces wrinkles and improves the texture of the skin. It can be found in sunflower oil, grains, oats, nuts, and dairy products.

Vitamin C helps to slow down the aging process and helps to repair free radicals and keeps them from becoming cancerous.

Vitamin K helps to reduce many degenerative diseases.

Lutien helps to keep your eyes healthy and helps to reduce Age-related Macular Degeneration. It can be found in leafy vegetables, such as spinach, collard greens, and kale.

How to Pick and Store Fruit

Have you ever been in a grocery store and was a little confused on what to look for when selecting the perfect fruit? I’ll tell you some things to look for.

When it comes to bananas you should pick ones that are yellow and have no brown spotting. They can be a little bit green as long as they are not completely green. Do not put bananas in the refrigerator because it makes them rot and darken quicker. You should lay them on their side on a counter. Laying a banana on its back can bruise it and laying it on its side helps it to ripen better.

When it comes to cantaloupe the best time to buy them is between June and August. When picking one you should make sure that it is free of dents and bruises. Minor dents and bruises will not spoil the fruit inside. To check if it’s ripe, gently press your thumb on its stem at the end of the fruit to see if it is soft. You should also sniff it to see if it smells sweet.

When it comes to peaches the best time to buy them is between August and September. To check its ripeness, you should look for golden undertones with a slight reddish color. Sniff the fruit to see if it smells sweet. If it doesn’t have a sweet odor it has been picked too early. It should also be firm and not hard. Do not store peaches in the refrigerator or they will become mushy instead of ripe. You should place them in a paper bag for a day or two so that they ripen correctly.

Strawberries are good to buy any time of the summer. You should check to make sure they are firm, have a vibrant color, and free of bruises. You should also sniff them to see if they smell fresh. Make sure you rinse them thoroughly and store them in an airtight drawer in the refrigerator to keep them fresh longer.

When buying a watermelon you should look for one with a dark green outer shell and that is slightly yellow or lighter green stripes. A watermelon that is too ripe will be sugary and hollow. Make sure it doesn’t have cracks, bruises, or soft spots. Storing a watermelon whole without cutting it makes it last longer.

To check the ripeness of a fruit if helps to flick the fruit with your finger on its side. You should be listening for a ping sound and not a thud sound. A fruit tastes best when you eat it within a few days of buying it.

The Powers of Green Tea

Studies show that drinking green tea is good for you. It can help with weight loss and fighting cancer. The EGCG that it contains stimulates metabolism and has cancer fighting properties. Green tea also contains theanine, which is a natural relaxant.

Doctors Create Schizophrenic Mice

It is reported that scientists have created the world’s first schizophrenic mice so that they could have a better understanding of the illness and be able to develop treatments. The mice were created by modifying their DNA to mimic a mutant gene first found in a Scottish family with a high incidence of schizophrenia. The egg cells of mice were genetically changed by injecting a gene associated with schizophrenia into their DNA. The eggs were fertilized and grown into baby mice using surrogate mothers.

The mice’s brains were found to have features similar to humans with schizophrenia, such as depression and hyperactivity.
